Rescue Story:
In February of 2020 we were all over the news for the rescue of the flock of parakeets released in a Houston park. We received a phone call that following weekend about a sick, elderly person who had a canary that needed placement. The owner had had a heart transplant, double mastectomy from breast cancer, and was now having a hard time getting around and could no longer care for the canary. The canary had, also, lost its mate during one of her surgeries and she wanted him to live with other birds. We had just taken in all the birds, so we said yes.
Ellie was funny at this time. Constantly regurgitating food out of his cage for the other birds and the birds in his mirrors. He would sing the most beautiful songs! Now he still “feeds” the birds in the mirrors and sings in the summers. We’ve tried to put Grevy, a Zebra finch, in with him for company but Grevy was too busy for Ellie. They are now neighbors and still chat with one another.
Canaries in captivity today have been bred from the wild canary, a small songbird in the finch family originating from the Macaronesian Islands. Canaries were first bred in captivity in the 17th century, having been brought to Europe by Spanish sailors. From the 18th up to the 20th centuries, canaries and finches were used in the UK, Canada and the US in the coal mining industry to detect carbon monoxide. A bird’s respiratory system is circular, and they process 100% of the air they breathe in, unlike mammals who only process about 30% because some air stays in our lungs and trachea with each breath. This is why cooking with Teflon, burning candles, and smoking with birds in the home will kill them.
At BEARS Etc. Ellie now has his PEACE of the Wild living next to friends, getting to do what Canaries want to do. Ellie currently has 1 sponsor! His sponsorship is $25/month. Sponsorship includes monthly emails, with picture or video! This sponsorship helps us provide the best veterinary care, the best diets, and, of course, their favorite enrichment and toys! Important Information Regarding Sublimation: All shirts are made using a technique called sublimation. The process involves transferring a special ink that chemically binds with polyester fibers when heated. This means you will not even feel the design on the shirt as it has essentially dyed the polyester strands (instead of leaving a film on top). This eliminates the potential for cracking and peeling associated with other ink transfer/vinyl methods. There is no white ink capabilities, so please keep in mind that any white in a design is a lack of ink, therefore, the background color of the shirt will show through in that area. Also, due to the semi-transparent nature of the ink, images might be slightly lighter than pictured (for example, black will appear dark charcoal).
